Negotiations between Comcast and Bally Sports' operator Diamond Sports Group, which has been under bankruptcy protection since last year, broke down following a dispute over terms. Pay-TV distributors have been losing customers at a fast clip in recent years as customers opt for cheaper streaming options. Comcast had more than 13.6 million pay-TV customers as of March 31, after losing 487,000 subscribers during the first quarter. Some regional sports networks have begun offering streaming options to customers at a price point that doesn't upend the pay-TV model. In addition to Comcast, Diamond has held negotiations in recent weeks with Charter Communications — which provides pay-TV services under the Spectrum brand — DirecTV and Cox Communications.

CNN —Voting technology company Smartmatic and the far-right network One America News said Tuesday that they had settled a defamation lawsuit stemming from the outlet’s lies about the 2020 election. “The case has been resolved pursuant to a confidential agreement,” OAN attorney Chip Babcock told CNN. The case against OAN was one of a spate of lawsuits filed against right-wing outlets in the aftermath of the election. In the wake of the 2020 presidential contest, pro-Donald Trump outlets spread lies wrongfully suggesting President Joe Biden had not been legitimately elected president. OAN settled a defamation suit in September with former Dominion executive Eric Coomer, whose case revealed how the network worked with former Trump campaign lawyer Sidney Powell and others to lie about the election.

Shifting some primetime entertainment to streaming services has made local stations less attractive, DirecTV said. DirecTV recently resolved a dispute with Cox Media Group, which owns several local stations. The satellite television provider on Sunday announced a package allowing customers to "opt out" of local stations. "That trend continues to diminish the quantity and quality of scripted entertainment on these same local stations." In February, DirecTV resolved its dispute with Cox Media Group, a conglomerate that owns several local television stations in markets across the country.

CNN —Rob Lowe turned 60 years old on Sunday, and literally, we can’t believe it. The “West Wing” star marked the occasion on his Instagram with a high-speed, 30-second selfie montage set to “Glory Days” by Bruce Springsteen, among other posts. Amanda Edwards/Getty ImagesThose 1983 flicks launched him into stardom, and Lowe’s crowning act as a pack member came in 1985’s “St. Elmo’s Fire,” in which he delivered an ultimately dramatic turn as bad boy gone good Billy. “Here’s to another 60 years,” he wrote in the caption.

It's been about a week since Disney , Warner Bros. Discovery and Fox announced a new joint venture to offer live sports outside the traditional cable bundle, and pay TV distributors are still trying to figure out just how disruptive the new service will be. New York CNN —Tuning into the Super Bowl used to be easy — flick on the TV and find the broadcast channel or channels it was airing on. Subscribers to both tiers of Paramount+ can watch the Super Bowl, which kicks off at 6:30 pm ET, the company said. It’s the first time Paramount+ has aired the Super Bowl. Attention from the Super Bowl could boost subscribers to Paramount+, which trails in compared to its competitors. For the majority of fans who are watching it traditionally, CBS is available via an antenna for free or through a cable, satellite or live TV streaming services like Hulu + Live TV or DirecTV Stream.

The new sports streamer that Disney, Warner Bros., and Fox announced Tuesday is a really big deal that could reshape TV . And then they charge the big pay TV distributors a ton to carry their broadcasts of those games. Which may explain why, up until Tuesday, they hadn't told any of the pay TV companies or sports leagues about their plans, industry executives tell me. But if you're the kind of person who's buying an antenna to watch sports TV, you're not going to buy this thing anyway.) Also: The big TV guys didn't like it in 2015 when HBO started competing with them by selling itself as a stand-alone service.

The service will launch this fall and cater to sports fans who don't subscribe to the traditional cable bundle. One person associated with the launch of the new venture told CNBC the platform will be "a monster" and massively disrupt cable TV. Cable TV has been relegated to an add-on that helps keep people subscribing to high-speed internet. The cable bundle has largely survived because it still contains exclusive live news and sports. Previously, the only way for cord cutters to get ESPN outside the cable bundle would have been that coming service.

YouTube TV is now the fourth-biggest pay TV service in the US. It's here now: Its YouTube TV offering has become one of the biggest pay-TV services in the US. YouTube TV — which, like conventional pay TV, sells a bundle of dozens of channels — now has "more than 8 million" subscribers, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan announced Tuesday morning. Now comes the other part of the equation: As YouTube TV has grown, conventional pay TV has shrunk. And it's partly because some pay TV providers — like Comcast — have stopped trying to convince customers to keep or get pay TV.

It will be easy to watch the Super Bowl, but many NFL games are out of fans' reach. But for many NFL fans, particularly those who live in a different state than the team they root for, watching football is rarely so easy. YouTube TV also provided access to a few Sunday afternoon Packers games on Fox. But several Packers games fell outside the NFL's regional coverage map , often leaving me with no choice but to watch Daniel Jones and the New York Giants. Fox Sports drove higher consumption overall for Fox Corporation last quarter, CEO Lachlan Murdoch said Thursday during the company's quarterly earnings call. "FOX Sports was a big driver of that consumption, especially with its broadcast of the Women's World Cup, where the U.S. versus the Netherlands on Fox with the most watched Women's World Cup game match ever on U.S. English language television," Murdoch said. Sports programming costs drove expenses higher, weighing on profit and offsetting revenue growth in the company's TV segment. Fox cited the Women's World Cup and the renewal of National Football League rights as major costs. But it comes with a massive price tag, especially as linear networks and streaming services have begun battling it out for programming rights.

Brands backing Kansas City Chiefs' player Travis Kelce, like Pfizer and Campbell's Soup, are also getting big boosts in engagement from Kelce's possible relationship with pop star Taylor Swift. Pfizer launched a campaign starring Kelce on Sept. 22 encouraging people to get the updated COVID-19 booster shot. There was a 32% increase in searches about Pfizer when that ad ran after Swift's Sept. 25 appearance, compared to before. EDO also found that Pfizer ads with Kelce drove 27% more search activity than Pfizer ads that did not feature him. Also, a Kelce-led TV ad from Experian posted on YouTube on Oct. 1 has already received more than 800,000 views, while a Kelce-less Experian TV ad promoting the same product has only accumulated 189,000 views.

CNN —DirecTV and Nexstar announced Monday that they had largely resolved a bitter carriage dispute that had left millions of the satellite carrier’s subscribers unable to access local television giant Nexstar’s large array of channels. The deal to end the blackout, which began in July and stretched for more than 75 days, comes one week after Disney and Charter also agreed to resolve a dispute that resulted in ABC-owned stations and ESPN being yanked from the cable provider’s lineup. While most of Nexstar’s stations will be covered under the new multi-year agreement, DirecTV said 27 stations controlled by Nexstar, but owned by another company, will not fall under the umbrella. DirecTV chief executive Bill Morrow alluded to the trend in a note to customers on Monday. “Unfortunately, over the past decade-plus access to your programming has become a battleground for networks and stations to try to drive up higher rates,” Morrow said.
